VACANCY: Akzo Nobel

Posted 26th February 2008, closing date for applications is Wednesday, 30th April 2008.

Akzo Nobel is one of the world's foremost coatings and specialty chemicals companies. There are a number of opportunities available for graduate and post-graduate scientists (including PhD students expecting to graduate in summer 2008) in Materials Science, Polymer Science and Measurement Science at the new laboratory in Song Jiang, near to Shanghai.

VACANCY: Material Development Engineer

Posted 19th February 2008, no closing date given.

Brinker Technology, a fast growing Aberdeen based company, is recruiting for a materials specialist to join their expanding R&D team and drive forward their material development programme.

SEMINAR: The Bioelectronic Interface: Sensors and Switches

Date: Wednesday 13th February, 14:00hrs
Location: Chemistry Dept. Lecture Theatre 1

By Dr Jason Davis from the Inorganic Chemistry Laboratory at the University of Oxford. Jason's work revolves around the use of electrochemical methods and scanning probe techniques to electrically address biomolecules. He has also developed some neat tip-based catalytic reagents for doing nanoscale chemistry.

WORKSHOP: New Frontiers in Polymer Waste Management

Date: 29th February 2008
Location: National Railway Museum, York

Polymers are an indispensable part of our industrialised society, but the waste they create causes environmental problems that must be mitigated through innovative strategies. The Polymer Innovation Network, in partnership with the Polymer IRC, is offering a one-day workshop to industrialists and academics to help understand the problems and issues relating to polymer waste and outline potential solutions.

Spring 2008 courses

Basic Polymer Science part I: 31st March 2008
Basic Polymer Science part II: 1st April 2008

Due to popular demand we are offering additional dates for the Basic Polymer Science introductory modules.

Nanotechnology 4 Chemists

Dates 3rd-5th June 2008
Location: Sheffield, UK

This course gives an introduction to the basic concepts that underlie nanotechnology. It explains how nanomaterials are made and characterised, and gives pointers to ways in which these properties will be exploited in the future to make new high added-value products.

The course is part of the RSC Training for Industry programme dedicated to supporting the Continuing Professional Development (CPD) needs of chemical scientists in industry and commerce.

EPSRC Nanotechnology Image Library

Polymer droplet by Kari Dalnoki-Veress

This new library features a fascinating selection of images and movies, which illustrate the field of nano-scale science and technology. The images are all of a high technical standard, and are available online at print resolution. Images and movies can be downloaded from the library under the Creative Commons (CC) license, making them an excellent, attributable resource for education and other uses.

Andy Eccleston created the library during his EPSRC sponsored research residency in the University of Sheffield's Physics and Astronomy department. A visual artist, Andy worked under the scientific supervision of Professor Richard Jones FRS (EPSRC Strategic Advisor for Nanotechnology) to prepare a visually stunning feast that manages to avoid the realms of fantasy.

The creators hope that scientists will continue to support the project, submitting new images to help build up a comprehensive online library.

Nanotechnology: A cure for our energy problems?

Date: Wednesday 7th November
Location: Richard Roberts Building Auditorium, Western Bank, Sheffield

This Public Lecture by Prof Tony Ryan OBE is part of the University of Sheffield's Chemistry Week celebrations. Tony is an entertaining speaker and his knowledge of the area coupled with the topicality of the subject will make this an enjoyable evening.

Faraday Discussion 139: The Importance of Polymer Science for Biological Systems

Date: 26 March - 28 March 2008
Location: University of York, United Kingdom

The meeting will aim to focus on two main strands: the physical chemistry of macromolecules as common ground between biology and polymer science; and the problems associated with biocompatibility and biodegradability of polymers, particularly with regard to their role as therapeutic delivery vehicles.

Polymer Synthesis 2008

Date: March 17 and March 20 2008
Location: Grand Oasis, Cancun, Mexico.

confirmed speakers include Christopher Barner-Kowollik, Eva Harth, Heather Maynard, Ian Manners, Kelly Velonia, Maurice Brookhart, Richard Schrock, Sebastien Perrier and Virgil Percec.

Meeting: RSC Biomaterials Chemistry Group

Date: 15th January 2008
Location: The University of Manchester.

This is the 3rd annual meeting of the group, providing a focus for people in UK universities and industry working on the synthesis and characterisation of biomaterials. It aims to enhance the understanding of the chemistries underlying the use of biomaterials in applications including prostheses, drug delivery and regenerative medicine.

24th Annual Meeting of the Polymer Processing Society, PPS-24

Date: 15-19th June 2008
Location: Salerno, Italy.

The Conference goals are to foster scientific understanding and technical innovation in polymer processing for the worldwide community of Engineers and Scientists in the field.

Abstract submissions should be made by the 1st November 2007.
